October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and at HikeHER Dallas, we’re committed to making a difference. This year, we invite you to participate in our Pink Hike on October 19th at Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve 5901 Los Rios Blvd, Plano, TX 75074. The first annual event organized by HikeHER Dallas to raise awareness for breast cancer. The event is not only a time to raise awareness but also to celebrate the strength, resilience, and hope of our community members who have been touched by breast cancer.

The Importance of Breast Cancer Awareness and Early Detection
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, and early detection is critical for increasing survival rates. By educating ourselves and our community about regular screenings and self-examinations, we can help reduce the devastating impact of breast cancer. The Pink Hike serves as a reminder that we are all part of the solution in raising awareness and supporting those affected by this disease.
Founder’s Journey: Luchi’s Story
HikeHER Dallas was founded by Luchi, whose personal battle with breast cancer fueled her mission to empower women through nature and community. A couple of years ago, In 2021, Luchi’s life took a sudden and heart breaking turn when her mother was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. For Luchi, cancer had always been something distant, but now it became a harsh reality. As she watched her mother bravely fight through the illness, something unexpected happened—Luchi herself was diagnosed with breast cancer in the midst of her mother's battle.
The timing was devastating. With her family already overwhelmed by the gravity of her mother’s condition, Luchi felt she couldn’t add to their burden. She faced the agonizing decision to keep her diagnosis to herself, grappling with her own fears while trying to be strong for her mother. Sadly, they lost her mom in 2022, the same year Luchi’s own fight with breast cancer began.
Just as she was learning to cope with the loss of her mother, Luchi’s cancer returned in 2023. The treatments were grueling—rounds of chemotherapy, surgeries, and radiation left her physically and emotionally drained. There were days when the pain, fatigue, and fear seemed insurmountable. She questioned whether she would make it through.
Despite these dark days, Luchi held onto her faith. She clung to the belief that God’s promise would see her through. She found solace and strength in nature—near mountains, waterfalls, and forests, she felt God’s presence most profoundly. It was in these moments of stillness and connection to the earth that she found the healing power of nature.
This connection to nature became the inspiration behind HikeHER Dallas, a faith-based hiking group that promotes holistic living and supports the breast cancer community. Luchi's story is no longer just about her personal battle—it has transformed into a mission to empower others to lead healthy, wholesome lives rooted in faith. For Luchi, every step she takes in nature and every breath of fresh air is a testament to God's grace and the strength found in community.
Through HikeHER Dallas, Luchi’s journey has become a shared path of healing for others, reminding everyone that no one has to walk this journey alone. Together, they hike toward healing, hope, and faith.
Stories of Strength from Our Community
The heart of HikeHER Dallas is our community, and within it are incredible stories of strength, resilience, and support. Here are just a few of the many inspiring stories that continue to drive us forward:
Angie Fowler’s story is one of immense courage and faith, beginning in 2017 when she discovered lumps in her breast. Initially dismissing them as weight gain, she eventually sought help at Planned Parenthood due to her lack of health insurance. After being referred to a cancer center, she was diagnosed with late-stage II Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, a type of breast cancer linked to the BRCA 2 gene mutation. Despite the seriousness of her diagnosis, her initial concern was about losing her hair, but her faith in God helped her focus on healing. Acting quickly, Angie began fertility treatments and chemotherapy, starting a two-year battle that included 16 rounds of chemotherapy, six surgeries, and hormone treatments. Through this difficult time, she was able to continue working, thanks to the understanding support of her employer and her strong belief in God’s grace.
Now in the survivorship phase, Angie reflects on the blessings she received, including finding love, marrying, and having a child naturally despite fertility challenges. While she doesn’t consider cancer a positive event in her life, she believes her faith carried her through and changed her for the better. Angie’s story is a reminder to be proactive about health, especially for those with a family history of cancer, and highlights the importance of early detection. She emphasizes that the BRCA 2 gene affects both men and women, linking it to breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers. Her journey serves as a powerful testament to the importance of faith and early intervention in overcoming life’s hardest battles.
Brittany Huntley's story is one of resilience, faith, and healing. From a young age, she endured severe menstrual pain that was often dismissed as normal, even though it caused her to miss school and pass out frequently. When a particularly intense pain sent her to the doctor, she was initially told it might be pancreatitis, but a trip to the ER revealed she had endometriosis and, more shockingly, ovarian cancer. After surgery, the doctor prescribed morphine and gave little guidance, leaving Brittany devastated and uncertain about her next steps. Over the next four years, she changed her lifestyle, adopting a plant-based diet to manage the pain, and continued seeking answers from doctors. Eventually, a new doctor explained she had been misdiagnosed, confirming the need for proper treatment.
Brittany was set to begin treatment at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America in January 2021. However, after fasting and praying with her pastors and friends, she received incredible news. On January 6, 2021, just four days after her last test, she was declared cancer-free. The path she had been preparing for—chemotherapy and further treatment—was no longer needed. Brittany's faith in God, specifically in His healing power as Jehovah Rapha, played a central role in her journey. Her story stands as a testament to the power of prayer, faith, and the strength to persevere against all odds.
These stories remind us of the deep connections that are made through shared experiences, and how the Pink Hike symbolizes the unity of our community in the collective fight against breast cancer.
